Spanning four malls across four cities in China, this study looked at projects at different phases of their lifecycles – one under development, two undergoing repositioning, and one fully operational. The four cities also presented very different retail propositions – Beijing, Xi’an, Qingdao and Shanghai. Each mall had very different features, as well as different economic and market challenges to navigate in the mid and long term.

The study combined Cistri’s expertise in consumer research and retail economics to provide a deeper understanding of the asset and its market. Our analysis identified the target shoppers for each mall, how best to attract them and the financial implications of various strategies. The advice will assist in maintaining and improve the performance of existing assets, while helping develop a tenant strategy for the projects under development.

The Cistri team displayed great versatility in understanding the different challenges and market dynamics across different Chinese cities and provided thoughtful, strategic and applicable advice
