Cistri, in partnership with Bureau^Proberts, participated in an open architectural competition. The competition brief called for a memorial to honour the legacy of Singapore’s founding generation of leaders, to strengthen Singaporeans’ sense of solidarity, and to inspire future generations to reflect on the ideals and values upon which Singapore is built.

The site chosen at Bay East Garden (opposite the famous Gardens By The Bay) possesses an inspiring vista of the evolving skyline and presents a very exciting opportunity in integrating fresh ideas. Foundation Place, as the team calls the response, is an intervention in the landscape that is connected to the foreshore, yet soars to elevate the visitor above the surrounds and the reservoir to connect with the panorama beyond.

This intervention is generated from the heart of Singapore, the place of its foundation, and centered on the evolving cityscape. The landscape intervention is a sampling of the Padang itself – the very heart of Singapore’s foundation and celebration. The park-like setting located near the water will encourage reflection and recreation, also serving as an indoor venue with interpretive and educational material.

Our design response is envisioned to be like no other place – bringing together Singaporeans and complementing other institutions in narrating the nation’s heritage, taking important lessons from the past while looking towards their shared future.
